What is Herbal Food?

Herbal food is not a new concept, in fact it is thousands of years old, much older than our Western (allopathic) medicine. It was and is practiced by the Native Americans, the Chinese, in India, in Europe, in Africa, on every continent and every place the world over. I personally believe it has been most likely practiced as far back as man has been on the earth.

Our kitchens are a treasure of health inspiring herbs. Cinnamon, is a powerful herb for improving blood circulation, clearing out congestion, and a regulator of blood sugar levels. Sprinkle it in your drinks, on ice cream as well as in your pies. If your refrigerator contains horseradish, you have found an excellent herb for sinus infection relief. When you look in the garden at your cabbage, these leaves are well known as a poultice for hives and shingles. Herbal food is all around us. Outside in your yard you may have dandelions, while most people spray to get rid of them, they are really getting rid of a great detoxifying spring tonic used to clear out toxins that have been built up through the winter.

How does Herbal Food Work?

Herbal food works much like general food in the body where it is digested and broken down into many nutrients that is used by the body for building body tissues, regulating organ systems, building blocks to hormones, amino acids, etc. These herbs help the body to have the nutrients it needs just like food. Most herbs such as in your typical cooking herbs, are dense with nutritional value and are little packed power houses on their own. As they are consumed, they give the body what it is lacking and helps the body get stronger and more efficient, thereby aiding in the body’s own healing processes.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in 1878, “What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not been discovered.”

Plants are essential for good health and every healthy diet has plants as a major portion in its makeup. Those that eat healthy diets tend to be healthy. Very simple concept. If people can be healthy by eating plants, then plants have the ability to bring back healthy bodies. So too with Herbal food. Herbal food takes plants with medicinal type properties and adds them into a person’s diet to encourage healthy aspects in whatever portion of the body, the mind or the spirit needs it.

Hippocrates stated, “Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.”

Thomas A. Edison stated. “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

Juliette de Bairacli Levy a famous herbalist said in her Common Herbs for Natural Health “Herbal medicine is man’s rightful medicine. The powers of herbs cannot be denied.”
